China's first scientific award for focusing fiber research

A seemingly ordinary fiber rope can withstand up to 8 times the weight of the same thick steel wire rope, and it will be passivated by cutting the stainless steel scissors blade for one minute. With the result of this ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber invented 40 years ago, Professor Pete Remster of the former Eindhoven University of Technology and Dr. Paul Smith of the former Zurich Institute of Technology won the first "Qian Baozhen" Award for Outstanding Contribution to Fiber Materials. This is a new award initiated by Donghua University and the first scientific award in the field of fiber research in China.

On May 27th, the first “Qianbaoyu Fiber Materials Award” awarding ceremony was held at Donghua University. Mr. Qian Baozhen is one of the founders of China's fiber materials and the founder of the Department of Fiber Materials at Donghua University. The discipline is the first chemical fiber specialty in New China. In order to better carry forward the spirit of Mr. Qian Baozhen and promote its sustainable development in the field of fiber materials, the State Key Laboratory of Fiber Materials Modification of Donghua University initiated and established this award, which was selected once every two years. The selection of awards is based on the recommendation system at home and abroad. Since the selection of the first "Qinbaoyu Fiber Materials Award" in April 2017, it has received recommendations from experts and scholars from the United States, Japan, the Netherlands, France, Australia and other countries. Professor Alsa Riqimannis, a member of the American Academy of Engineering and the International Federation of Pure and Applied Chemistry, was the chairman of the awards committee. He led the well-known academicians and experts in the field of fiber materials at home and abroad to review the recommended materials. In the end, Professor Pete Remster of the former Eindhoven University of Technology and Dr. Ball Smith of the former Zurich Institute of Technology won the "Bao Baozhen Fiber Materials Outstanding Contribution Award", Professor Gao Chao of Zhejiang University and the Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne. Professor Phoebe Sore was awarded the "Qian Baozhen Fiber Materials Young Scholar Award".
