With the start of winter heating in Beijing, many people began to complain that the air in the home was dry, and they planned to buy a humidifier to increase the humidity inside the house.
If the humidifier is used for a long time and is not diligently changed or cleaned, the inner wall of the humidifier is likely to breed fungi or bacteria, causing allergic reactions, fever, and pneumonia.
“The humidifier can improve the indoor humidity very well, but I don’t recommend adding any chemicals to the humidifier.†Professor Wang Guangfa from the Department of Respiratory Medicine, Peking University First Hospital said that it is better to use distilled water with less impurities to reduce the Lung, respiratory damage.
Humidifier preferred distilled water
When using a humidifier at home, Professor Wang Guangfa suggested using distilled water with less impurities.
"If you want to use a kind of water, use ultrasonic atomization to make them into the lungs, preferably water without impurities. Relatively speaking, distilled water is an ideal water. However, when humidifying indoors, it is not easy to overdo it. Professor Wang Guangfa reminded.
Many people also want to add some perfumes or essential oils to the humidifier. Professor Wang thinks this is also very unsuitable. Because these chemicals containing fragrances and preservatives are designed to be in contact with the skin of the human body, rather than in direct contact with the organs of the human body, it is best not to take risks.
Humidifier "raised" bacteria cleaner is difficult to clean
Professor Wang Guangfa believes that the concept of the humidifier is very good, as long as the water used is clean and has less impurities, a small amount of inhalation is no problem.
However, if the humidifier is used for a long time and is not diligently changed or cleaned, the inner wall of the humidifier is likely to breed fungi or bacteria. There is a good chance that there are pathogenic bacteria that enter the body's respiratory tract and lungs through tiny water droplets, which may cause allergic reactions, fever, and pneumonia. This type of pneumonia is collectively referred to as "humidifier pneumonia."
Many people think that it is enough to clean the humidifier with disinfectant and bactericide. Even after repeated washing, it is difficult to ensure that the sterilizing agent does not remain.
"If it is only bacteria that enter the lungs through water droplets, which can cause pneumoconiosis in the humidifier, then the fungicide can enter the lungs through water droplets, which can cause aseptic inflammation, because these daily chemical products are not designed to enter and touch. Human organs, which have not been verified and studied by the laboratory, are also unknowingly caused by damage." Professor Wang Guangfa said that this can explain the cases of death in Korea due to the use of humidifier fungicides. The cause of functional impairment of the lungs, followed by pulmonary fibrosis and death.
Winter indoor humidity is not more than 60%
"The winter climate is dry. The humidifier can keep the air moist, but the air is also wet. There is a certain standard. The humidity is too high, but it is not good for the human body." Professor Wang Guangfa said.
The most suitable air relative humidity in winter is 40%-60%, which is not suitable for dry or too wet. Too dry will cause dry throat and get angry, but too moist may cause diseases such as pneumonia.
Professor Wang emphasized that once the air humidity is lower than 20%, the amount of inhalable particles in the room increases, which makes it easy for people to catch a cold. Under normal circumstances, when the air humidity is 55%, the bacteria are difficult to spread, but if the air humidity is too high, such as more than 90%, the human respiratory system and mucous membranes will be discomfort and the immunity will decrease.
Hospital atomizer for special patients
Professor Wang Guangfa introduced that in clinical practice, there is a special hospital inhalation device for patients with some lung diseases. Using medical saline or special drugs, the drug is delivered to the lower respiratory tract of the patient through a small aerosol. In the lungs, the patient relaxes the bronchi or increases the airway moistness. This is completely different from the humidifier used at home.
For example, some patients need to go to the hospital to use a nebulizer, and the inhaled component is medical saline. "Do not underestimate the saline, it must be sterile, multi-treated, non-impurity water, high-purity sodium chloride." Professor Wang Guangfa said, do not think that adding salt water to the humidifier at home can inhal the treatment.

Asthma allergy caution humidifier
In the family, some special people are better off the humidifier.
Professor Wang Guangfa said that patients with a history of allergies, asthma, etc., are better off. Because the humidifier is likely to bring some tiny dust or bacteria in the room into their lungs through water droplets, it will aggravate their condition.
